Why do young people become homeless?

Young people become homeless for a wide range of reasons. The two most common reasons for young people using our scheme is family breakdown followed by relationship breakdown. Family breakdown seems to affect more of our younger users in the 16 -19 age range and relationship breakdown seems to affect more of our older users in the 20+ age group.

Other reasons for use of our scheme includes tenancy breakdown, eviction for non payment of rent or other reasons, leaving care, custody or hospital.

We would urge young people to stay where they are for tonight if it is safe and to arrange temporary accommodation before leaving your present home. Only if you feel unsafe or are already homeless should you use a Nightstop bed. If you have our last bed that means someone else who is unsafe cannot use our bed.

Our beds are only for tonight or for three nights across a weekend. We will sign post you to an agency that will help you look for longer term accommodation. We are not a permanent solution to your issues but we hope that your stay with us will give you a chance to reflect on your position, gather information and make an informed decision on your next move. If necessary you will be re referred back to Nightstop if no accommodation can be found for you. The average number of nights young people use the scheme is 2 nights but some young people have to use it for over a week. This is quite rare.
