Work placements in our office
Here at Nightstop we welcome volunteers into every sector and are keen to accommodate students wishing to gain experience in the third sector with a small grass roots charity such as Bradford Nightstop.
All volunteers are subject to CRB checks and references due to the vulnerable and confidential nature of the type of information we are dealing with.
Lucy, a 2nd Year Social Work Student on a 60 day placement, wrote this after 3 weeks of working with us:
'Looking back on my first 3 weeks with Nightstop, I can already start to see how much I have learnt about young people; how they become homeless and the important role that Nightstop has within Bradford. It aims to ensure that as many young people as possible are provided with a safe and warm place to sleep, rather than sleeping on the streets.
Within my role, I have been able to follow up some of these young people after/during their stay with Nightstop, and it has provided me with the opportunity to meet some young people face to face and provide them with any relevant support they may need in their quest to find a more permanent and appropriate place to live.
Some of the situations I have come across have been much more complicated than others, and sometimes required a lot of on-going and in depth work with that particular young person. However, this raises my awareness that homelessness can affect ANYONE and that it is essential for statutory services and charities to be there to offer a helping hand for everyone who needs it.
I would definately recommend anyone else coming to Bradford Nightstop on a placement in the future.'
Matthew spent some time on work experience with us, here's how he got on:
"I'm Matthew I'm 15 and I did my work experience at Bradford Nightstop. When I started my work experience I didn't know much about about youth homelessness. I didn't think it was much of a problem in Bradford but I then learnt Bradford has the highest rate of youth homelessness in the country.
I came across a young person who had been pushed out of their home by their parent. I spent a day with them and saw what they had to go through just to get a bed for a night they would have to do this every night until they had permanant housing at a place like stepping stones or another similar organisation.
Bradford Nightstop get money by recieving donations from people and companies. Today I went to a hosts home to look round and feel what it would be like for a young person to be in a situation like that were they don't really know the person whos house they are in. I also took some photographs for Bradford and Bingley of a young boy who was in a hosts house eating some cereal the photos I took may be appearing in the Telegraph and Argos along with an article about Bradford Nightstop and Bradford and Bingley."
